That opportunity changed everything. The scheme didn’t just give me experience, it gave me direction, and eventually, a career. I learned how to work in a team, how to communicate professionally, and how to find my feet in a world that initially felt far beyond me. Over time, with the support of my colleagues and exposure to the inner workings of the industry, I built a career. Now, as an Investment Support Executive at TMGA, I often reflect on how powerful those early experiences were.
That’s why I’m proud to be part of a local business that’s investing in the next generation through initiatives like the Trident work experience programme.
Trident is a long-running programme in Jersey that provides Year 10 students with valuable work experience placements. At TMGA, we support this scheme, annually opening our doors to a local student and giving them a real taste of the wealth management industry.
Over the course of their time at TMGA, students take part in a structured programme that touches on a range of key functions within our business, including the importance of good governance and strong compliance.
Our placements are designed to go beyond observation. Over the course of their time at TMGA, students take part in a structured programme that touches on a range of key functions within our business, including the importance of good governance and strong compliance.
But arguably our most engaging sessions is the deep dive into investment management and our investment strategies that we manage on behalf of our clients.
At TMGA, we provide students with comprehensive insight into the investment management industry by offering a structured overview of the financial markets and key asset classes. Through hands-on learning, students are given insight into how we conduct investment research and produce research notes. We also introduce them to the structure and function of our investment committees, explaining how each plays a distinct role while interlinking to form a cohesive investment decision-making process.
We walk students through the fundamentals of how we construct investment portfolios, tailored to a variety of risk appetites and investment goals. We introduce them to our core investment strategies, each of which combines a blend of asset classes including global equities, fixed income, alternatives, and cash. Students get to see how these strategies are actively monitored and adjusted over time, with decisions shaped by research and a disciplined, long-term view of the markets.
They also learn about investment performance, with real-world examples that show the impact of diversification, risk management, and disciplined rebalancing. While students gain insight into genuine investment processes and decision-making, client confidentiality is strictly upheld by restricting access to all client information.
Throughout the programme, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore what interests them most, and reflect on how different roles within the business contribute to the wider client experience. Each participant takes part in sessions with our senior investment directors, who bring a wealth of experience from the Jersey wealth management industry, offering valuable insight from those who’ve spent years navigating the profession.
It’s great to see students asking thoughtful questions and bringing fresh perspectives, and for our team, it’s a reminder of the value of what we do and the importance of giving back.
The feedback from students has been incredibly positive. Ben, a Year 10 student said:
“I appreciated the welcoming environment, the chance to learn from such knowledgeable professionals, and the exposure to the practical aspects of wealth management. The experience has inspired me to pursue further opportunities in this field.”
TMGA is committed to continue giving students with an interest in wealth management meaningful, hands-on experience. After all, supporting young people at the start of their journey isn’t just about giving back, it’s about investing in a more informed, inclusive, and resilient future for our industry.
If students leave their placement with us feeling more confident, more inspired, and better able to picture themselves in a professional environment, then we know it’s been worthwhile.
